On April 27, 2011, a devastating EF5 tornado touched down in Smithville, Mississippi, causing significant damage and loss of life. The tornado was 1.5 miles wide and traveled for 132 miles, with winds reaching up to 205 mph.
In Smithville, the tornado destroyed much of the town, including the town hall, several churches, and many homes. It also caused the deaths of 16 residents.
The tornado was a part of a larger outbreak of severe weather across the southeastern United States, which resulted in 358 deaths and billions of dollars in damages.
Following the tornado, the town of Smithville received significant support and aid from local and national organizations, as well as from neighboring communities. Today, the town has rebuilt and continues to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the tornado.
